Usually a cream or powder (also available as a stick), foundation is used to even the skin tone of the face.

Foundation is commonly applied once a day in the morning after the face has been fully cleansed, toned, and moisturized.

Foundation can be the first step in applying makeup, although some women like to apply a pre-foundation concealer in problem areas to enhance the smoothing effect.
